2007 UPDATES:

Update 3/21/07: The Business Recovery Grant and Loan Program administered by Louisiana Economic Development (LED) recently received approval of an additional $68 million by the Louisiana Recovery Authority (LRA) board upon recommendation from Governor Blanco. The proposed allocation will enable state government to provide a second round of grants and loans to small businesses affected by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

"The beauty of this allocation is that it will enable us to offer assistance to many businesses who may not have met the eligibility requirements of the first round of the program, but who did suffer business losses," said Michael Hecht, director of business assistance for LED. "Many small business owners still need assistance, especially those who poured personal resources into their companies to keep them afloat."

The first round of grant applications ended on February 16, with more than 5,600 businesses applying for grants up to $20,000 and more than 1,000 businesses applying for zero interest loans. LED expects to announce the recipients of those grants and loans in early April.

Before LED can execute a new round of funding, the proposed allocation amendment will go to the Governor and the Louisiana legislature for approval. Then the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development must also approve the allocation. The entire review and approval process is expected to take approximately 90 days.
